Roof signs contract with Texas Rangers

Deciding to forgo his senior season for the MSU baseball team, shortstop Jonathan Roof signed a contract Saturday with the Texas Rangers.

Last Tuesday, Roof became the highest drafted Spartan since 2002 when he was selected by the Rangers in the eighth round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

This season, Roof led the Big Ten in assists (173) and tied for fifth in runs scored (53) and fielding double plays (43) on his way to being named first team All-Big Ten.

Roof previously had been drafted by the Boston Red Sox out of high school, but chose to come to play at MSU.
