MSU unveils technology upgrades

May 20, 2010

The Academic Technology Services Open House and MSU Computer Store Expo was held Thursday at Computer Center to showcase some upcoming technological renovations at the university.

Updates will occur in the computer labs at Berkey and Wells Halls, which will be completely upgraded with new paint, flooring, printers and computers. The updates will be completed by fall 2010, said Steve Jowett, a presenter at the expo.

Academic Technology Services, or ATS, has upgraded eight computer labs at MSU since 2008.

To Beth Bonsall, spokeswoman for ATS, the expo was all about gaining exposure for campus technological upgrades.

“We just want to let the campus know what ATS is, what we do and look for ways to partner with other IT staff,” Bonsall said.

ATS primarily is responsible for MSU’s Internet networks, such as MSU’s e-mail client, ANGEL and MSUnet Wireless. ATS has equipped 272 classrooms with enhanced technology, said Thomas Davis, executive director of ATS.

“Students today, believe it or not, are not that different from yesterday,” Davis said. “Their expectations are just a lot higher.”

Still, Davis said he wants to see more improvement.

“I think we have to do more things with mobile,” Davis said. “Other schools doing things with mobile are primarily convenience. You can tell if a washing machine is open in the dorm or not. We want more academic value than that.”

Student presence at the event was limited, and event coordinators said reduced student numbers during the summer or lack of interest might be the cause.

“We are open to talk to students,” Davis said. “We’d love to know what we can do better.”

Although many students might appreciate renovations to computer labs, general problems across the university are a bigger concern to at least one student.

“With MSU mandating students to have a computer I really think there should be greater technological upgrades,” said Tiffany Ingram, a social relations and policy senior. “I think the library should be on the list of upgrades. I have been there before and all the systems and printers (were) down.”
