No. 6 MSU finishes 10th in NCAA preview

October 25, 2009

The No. 6 MSU women’s golf team closed out its fall season with a 10th place finish at the NCAA Preview at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.

The Spartans finished with a 40-over score of 904 in the 54-hole tournament, shooting rounds of 301, 305 and 298.

No. 13 Duke won the event with a 17-over 881.

“There were a lot of positives, but there were also some negatives,” MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. “We finished 10th in a field that’s filled with the best teams in the county and we don’t feel great about what we did, which shows what we’re capable of.”

The 18-team tournament featured 15 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25 and the Pete Dye Course is the host of the 2010 NCAA Championships in May.

Freshman Caroline Powers led the Spartans with a 9-over 225, while sophomore Shannon Warner shot an 11-over 227. Senior Laura Kueny (12-over 228) and sophomore Lindsey Solberg (15-over 231) rounded out MSU’s scoring.

Slobodnik-Stoll said despite some struggles, the Spartans are better off for the experience.

“We don’t have anything to worry about,” Slobodnik-Stoll said.

“We’re still going to be a top 10 (team) and we still have the spring season to look forward to, which is what really counts, with the Big Ten and Nationals. This was just a preview for what we’re going to be facing (in May).”
