Newman ties for 2nd in golf tournament

The MSU men’s golf team finished in eighth place at the 15-team UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C., this weekend, shooting a 7-over score of 871.

The Spartans entered Sunday tied for fourth place after shooting rounds of 286 and 284 on the first two days, but dropped to eighth after carding a 301 on the final day.

Georgia Tech won the event with a 21-under score of 843.

Senior Jack Newman led the Spartans with a three-day score of 10-under, firing rounds of 67, 69 and 70. Newman also finished tied for second in the tournament with North Carolina’s Jack Fields, one stroke behind Virginia’s Amory Davis, who fired a 11-under 205.

Newman was the only MSU golfer who finished under par. Freshman James Ross posted MSU’s next best score, an 8-over 224, while senior Andrew Ladwig and sophomore Dan Ellis each fired 11-over scores of 227.

The UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate was MSU’s final tournament of the fall season.
