MSU hockey sees roster changes

October 5, 2009

Nine new freshmen can be found on the MSU hockey team’s roster this season.

But two returning sophomores are missing from the list.

Forwards Ben Warda and Adam Henderson aren’t on the roster and head coach Rick Comley has confirmed both have left the program.

Comley said he was very high on Warda entering last season, but Warda struggled.

Warda recorded one goal and four assists last season and appeared in 33 games. His lone goal came in the Spartans’ fourth game of the season against UMass-Lowell.

“He didn’t like where he was in the lineup and maybe he didn’t like what his prospects were,” Comley said. “He came in and we talked one day. He’s been on the fifth line, but that didn’t mean he was going to be there all year, or forever.”

Henderson left MSU to return to the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he played for two seasons before coming to MSU.

Last season, Henderson had one goal and one assist in 27 game appearances.

Comley said the departure of both players was a result of a talented class of incoming freshmen and heavy competition.

“Last year maybe was a little misleading for the kids because they played every night — it didn’t matter how we played, win or lose,” Comley said. “They all played and they all played a lot. That’s not the case this year. They have to be better than they were last year to be able to play on this team.”
