“I understand that not every homeowner can afford to pay me to work on their houses, so they will generally do some repairs, and if I can push them in the right direction, save them a little money, help them, protect their families and everything else from the hazards of construction — yeah, it’s well worth doing,” said Joe Barros, general renovation contractor of Progressive Remodeling.
Barros spent Thursday night at the Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster Ave., in Lansing, teaching current and future homeowners how to repair the drywall and ceilings in their homes.
The event was part of the Homeowner Education Resource Organization, or HERO, classes put on by the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition.
Lansing resident Sun Wilson, who moved into her Habitat for Humanity house two months ago, regularly attends
the classes.
“I want to learn as much as I can about being able to do stuff in my house so if something breaks down or needs to be done, I can do it and I don’t have to hire somebody and hope that I find the money,” Wilson said.
