MSU to play in tournament overseas

September 7, 2009

The MSU men’s golf team will take part in what head coach Sam Puryear called a “life-altering experience” beginning Tuesday, when they begin competition in the 27th annual Topy Cup in Tokyo.

“It’s a great experience for the guys,” Puryear said. “Teams are invited, so it’s definitely a great experience for the kids. It’s a life-altering experience, if you think about it, going to Japan. All the teams I’ve talked to and all the kids I’ve talked to who have gone over the course of the last 10 or fifteen years still talk about it to this day.”

The Topy Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments in collegiate golf, Puryear said. Each year, 16 American and Japanese college teams, made up of 80 golfers, plus another 10 individual golfers, meet at Tanagura Country Club to compete in the 54-hole stroke play event.

One of the Japanese teams competing, Tohoku Fukushi, has won the past four Topy Cups.

This year, the Spartans are joined in the field by Washington, Texas and Colorado State as American teams taking part on the men’s side. The Wake Forest and Arizona State women’s golf teams also are competing in the event.

The Spartans left for Tokyo on Thursday and planned to play a practice round Monday before starting competition, a three-day event, today.
