2nd-hottest day of summer fails to keep residents indoors

August 9, 2009

Sunday was the second-hottest day of the summer thus far, but it didn’t keep area residents inside.

The high was 91 degrees Sunday, WLNS 6 News meteorologist Jim Geyer said. High humidity pushed the heat index, the measure of the apparent temperature, to 98 degrees.

“The hottest day of the summer was 93 degrees on June 24,” Geyer said.

Sunday bumped June 25, with a high of 90 degrees, from the position of second-hottest day. Geyer said July had been cooler than usual.

East Lansing resident Joel Dejong, who attended the Great Lakes Folk Festival, said the heat hadn’t bothered him.

“I’ve been staying pretty cool (by) staying in the shade and drinking lots of water,” he said.

Belding resident Laura Kapuscinski said she couldn’t find any spaces in the shade that would let her hear the music.

“It has been one of the few really hot days, and the humidity is high, too, and of course that happens; you’re at a festival, but the breeze helps,” she said.

Lansing resident Ed Lahti had a different strategy for beating the heat.

“Keep going into air-conditioned buildings,” he said.

The heat didn’t bother everyone who ventured outside, though.

“It’s a great day to sit out and enjoy the culture,” Bath resident Al Stewart said as he sipped a cup of lemonade.

Lansing resident Rob Champagne said he was enjoying the weather.

“It’s actually starting to feel like a Michigan summer,” he said.

Geyer said the heat will continue Monday, with temperatures in the mid to high-80s.

“(Monday is) going to be as humid (as Sunday). It’s not going to be as hot because we’re going to have some clouds and thunderstorms moving through,” he said. “(But) it’s going to feel like the 90s.”

He said a front moving through the area Monday night will bring temperatures back to normal Tuesday. The average high for this time in August is about 81 degrees, he said. He said Sunday’s heat affected most of Michigan, with temperatures in Detroit hitting 94 degrees, with a heat index of 105 degrees.

“A heat advisory (was) in effect from Lansing on southward,” he said.
