Q&A with starting tight end Charlie Grant

April 16, 2009

The State News talked with junior Charlie Gantt, the Spartans’ starting tight end. He has scored four touchdowns so far in his MSU career, with 19 passes for 302 reception yards.

Here’s what Gantt had to say about the expectations he has for the upcoming season, as well as some comparisons to last season.

State News: How much easier is it — after adjusting to the new offense since Dantonio brought it in a couple years ago — adjusting to the new concepts of it, and how comfortable are you with it?

Charlie Gantt: It’s our second or maybe almost third of this offense right now. When we first got here, we didn’t know what we were doing. Now, it’s like we’re putting in more stuff and more stuff.

SN: How exciting is it to be putting in more stuff, especially seeing different quarterbacks who bring different stuff to the table?

CG: It’s great to see this year. We’ve got more mobile quarterbacks this year, so we’re doing some options. There are a bunch of different kind of strings. So it’s looking good.

SN: How is the offense different from last year?

CG: I mean, it’s not going to look too much different. We’ll have maybe a little more mobility, more versatility and more options.

SN: How important is wrapping up the spring on a good note, especially with the couple of scrimmages you have coming up?

CG: It’s very important. It gives the chance for the young guys to get a look … for the coaches to look to see what the young guys can do. They have a good look at summer camp coming up.

SN: For you personally, what are your expectations for the upcoming season?

CG: Personally, I want to be All-Big Ten. I also just want to help our team out as much as possible in any way I can.
