MSU golfer performs well in first round of Masters

April 9, 2009

MSU junior Jack Newman will become the first Spartan golfer to play in the Masters Tournament when he tees off April 9 in Augusta, Ga. Newman is one of five amateur golfers who will compete for the Green Jacket.

MSU golfer Jack Newman fired an even-par 72 Thursday at the Masters tournament in Augusta, Ga., completing his opening round with four birdies in the final five holes.

Newman, the first MSU golfer to play in the Masters, finished tied for 39th, which puts him ahead of such notable names as Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen.

Newman’s late rally pushed him ahead of his playing partners, 1992 Masters champ Fred Couples and 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate, who each shot 73.

Going into the second round, Newman is seven shots behind the leader, Chad Campbell. To make the two-day cut, Newman must finish in the top 44, plus ties, or within 10 strokes of the leader.

Newman tees off at 8:55 a.m. today for his second round.
