More than 200 members and friends of the MSU International Students Association, or ISA, gathered at the East Lansing Marriott at University Place ballroom, 300 M.A.C. Ave., Friday night in a blur of dresses, finger foods and laughing couples.
If that sounds a lot like prom night, don’t be surprised — ISA’s Assistant Director of Public Relations Radhika Arora said that was part of the plan.
“A lot of international students have never had a prom night,” Arora said. “This is a way to have them experience getting dressed up, and just to get a feel of that.”
The ISA has done Valentine’s Day events in the past, but this year opted to make the event more formal by moving it off campus. The event was sponsored by ASMSU and free to students.
ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.
And indeed, this was classier than a typical prom; there wasn’t a bumping or grinding dancer in sight.
MSU’s Ballroom Dance Club led the dancers in performance and lessons. The club’s vice president, international relations and theater junior Marla Kalmbach, said this dance was a good venue for the ballroom dancers.
“Our big thing is we want people to learn how to dance. It’s a great way to socialize and have fun,” Kalmbach said, “We want to bring the dancing back to Lansing one event at a time.”
The ISA is known for its inclusion of both domestic and international students, and the mix on the dance floor was apparent.
Iqra Hussain, a chemistry and microbiology and molecular genetics sophomore, came to the dance with a group of mentors from McDonel Hall, which houses many international students.
“I usually come to these events because a lot of my residents are international students,” Hussain said. “I try to get them involved with the ISA so they see a lot of diversity and what we have to offer.”
If the demeanor of the guests was any indication, the event was a success. Finance senior Abhishek Damani’s friend invited him to come, and his only regret was never having attended before.
“I wish I’d come here my freshman year. I missed out on three years, but I’m making up for it,” Damani said.
