Potter Park Zoo to give rhinos more space

January 12, 2009

Potter Park Zoo, 1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave., in Lansing, has announced plans to expand its popular eastern black rhino exhibit. The proposed renovation will expand the indoor rhino facility and feature two enlarged outdoor habitats to create a more natural environment.

Zoo Director Gerald Brady said the project is coordinating design efforts with a noted rhino conservation expert from the Columbus Zoo. He said the new habitat will be more than twice the size of the current one. Special features will include rubberized floors to protect the rhinos’ feet and a new scale system for medical treatments. A revamped viewing area will improve visitors’ access to the rhinos and ease the animals’ anxiety around crowds.
