Ringer earns AP All-America honor

December 16, 2008

MSU senior running back Javon Ringer was named an Associated Press All-American on Tuesday, becoming the first MSU offensive position player to garner the recognition since 2002.

Ringer and Iowa junior running back Shonn Greene were the two tailbacks voted to the annual list of the nation’s top college football players by members of the Associated Press. The accolade will be added to a long list of awards for Ringer, who was a Doak Walker Award finalist as the nation’s top running back and was a consensus first team All-Big Ten selection this season.

The Dayton, Ohio native led the nation with 21 touchdowns on 370 rushing attempts, which were more carries than any other Football Bowl Subdivision player. Ringer also ranked second in the nation with 1,590 rushing yards and was third nationally with 132 yards per game.

With MSU’s bowl game remaining, Ringer is likely to finish his Spartans career as the school’s second all-time rusher behind Lorenzo White, who also was named an AP All-American in 1985. Ringer becomes the sixth MSU tailback to make the list and the first since White.

The most recent offensive position player to be named to the AP All-America team was wide receiver Charles Rogers, who was voted to the squad in 2002. Punter Brandon Fields was the most recent Spartan to receive the recognition in 2004.

No Spartans made the second- or third-team All-America teams.
