New Web sites give MSU emerging online presence

December 3, 2008

The MSU Athletics Department knew if it didn’t establish a sleek, sexy, yet innovative Web site approach, it’d be left in the dust in the ever-changing technological world.

And when the staff realized they weren’t deep enough to do so, they brought in the necessary forces to reach the level they aspired to be at in the spring.

Those two people were David Diffenderffer, Web video producer, and Bernie Rosendahl, Web site manager — brought on board to spice up the department’s Web site, www.msuspartans.com, and create other miniature sites filled with videos, statistics, photo slideshows and various news stories and features from across the country on the biggest names in Spartans sports. The goal was to appeal to not only fanatics, but recruits and the friends and family of current and future players.

John Lewandowski, associate athletics director for communications, called MSU’s goal a potential “one-stop shop” for anyone visiting the Web sites while Diffenderffer said it’s a perfect way to showcase the entire university and get the viewers excited to be a part of the Spartans nation.

“With the Internet and the way content is now being delivered, we knew expanding our coverage as much as possible would be the best move,” said Diffenderffer, who worked for a year in the NFL’s video production department in Los Angeles. “Not only does (msuspartans.com) have more coverage than ever, but we’ve developed sites to let the nation know, ‘Hey guys, the Big Ten has some serious talent too.’”

Throughout the past few months, Diffenderffer and Rosendahl have worked hand in hand with the sales and marketing staff as well as all other pertinent sectors of the athletics department to pump out sites dedicated to senior running back Javon Ringer (www.ringer23.com), football head coach Mark Dantonio (www.coachdantonio.com) and men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo (www.coachizzo.com).

And Rosendahl is the main component responsible for the sharp imagery seen on all four sites, providing a setup that allows any person easy access to all the heaps of information.

Ringer’s personalized Web site was created to spark more national hype for the humble warrior who many people didn’t put as high up on their lists of talented running backs because of a lack of excessive celebration and flash. But with giant, bold numbers (first in touchdowns, second in rushing yards, first in attempts) and Ringer’s intense eyes staring the user in the face on the Web site, one cannot help but click around.

“If a guy has as good of a season as Ringer is having, he or she could definitely get a site dedicated to increase awareness,” Rosendahl said. “We have the ability to do that with these designed sites, linking them off (msuspartans.com).”

The same goes for Izzo and Dantonio’s sites. But as opposed to just promoting the individual, the Web location strives to provide the whole package.

“Coach Dantonio’s site started in the spring as a place to house videos and quick information,” Rosendahl said. “Now we’re working on Izzo’s, building it and focusing more on the facilities and things a part of the basketball program which will be updated throughout the year.”

In the immediate future, the athletics department plans to post bowl game information with interviews and a backdrop for the giant stage set for Jan. 1, as soon as the news is released on where the Spartans are headed.
