Leaders stress need for infrastructure

December 3, 2008

Leaders in the Lansing area urged the Michigan Legislature on Wednesday to pass transportation funding and reforms proposed Nov. 5 by the Transportation Funding Task Force.

Supporters of the infrastructure reforms said thousands of jobs would be created and billions of dollars would be generated if there were increased support for road and bridge repairs and a significant expansion of mass transit in the state.

If the state Legislature does not pass these reforms, Michigan will not receive federal funds that are expected to be sent out by President-elect Barack Obama next year. The funds would be part of a national economic stimulus program to rebuild infrastructure.
