Fine set for MSU campus arsonist

November 10, 2008

A man will have to pay more than $4 million in restitution for his involvement in the 1999 New Year’s Eve arson at Agriculture Hall.

Frank Brian Ambrose, who was sentenced in October for setting fire to offices of the Agriculture Biotechnology Support Project in 1999, originally was ordered to pay $3.7 million.

But there was some confusion on the restitution amount, so U.S. District Court Judge Paul Maloney submitted a new sum, Assistant U.S. Attorney Hagen Frank said.

There were no objections to the latest amount.

The confusion stemmed from a low-damage estimate of a separate arson in Indiana, but there is no question regarding Ambrose’s obligation to pay the restitution, Frank said.

“It was just clearing up some math,” he said.
