Cold weather belated, still detours everyday travel

November 16, 2008

East Lansing residents might need to start digging out their shovels and winter coats this week.

While most areas reported an inch of snowfall, Okemos received about 2.2 inches.

The snowstorms that hit the West Coast last week are not connected to the storm that hit the Lansing area, said Rob Dale, a meteorologist for WLNS Channel 6.

“This is just some lake effect snow with cold air pressure coming down from Canada,” he said.

In past years at this time, there has already been recorded snowfall in the area.

“Normally we have 2.3 inches by now but we’ve only seen 1.6 inches,” Dale said.

The snowfall on Sunday caught international relations and journalism senior Sallie You off guard.

“I think we were way too spoiled this week. I was hoping it would not be this bad,” You said.

Even though You likes the snow, she said that she felt Sunday’s snow was too much.

The sudden change in weather may even cause her to change her mode of campus transportation.

“Normally, I take my bike, so now I’m kind of worried about how I’m going to bike tomorrow,” You said. “I’ll probably take the bus now because it’s snowing so much.”

Changing travel plans or methods is one of the ways outdoor plans are hindered during the winter months. While some see the snow as a way to engage in outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding and sledding, that’s not the case for general management freshman Tiffany Hu. For Hu, the cold weather means that she will most likely be spending the majority of the next few months indoors.

“It’s cold and I’m frozen,” Hu said. “I guess I’ll just be staying home.”

Below normal cold temperatures as well as snow flurries are forecasted for the next week.

“We’re in this cold pattern for the next week, so snowstorms can be expected,” Dale said.
