MSU Board approves tuition hike

October 24, 2008

The MSU Board of Trustees approved today a tuition and fee increase of 1.2 percent for the Spring 2009 semester.

The increase comes after state appropriations for the 2008-2009 school year were 2 percent less — or $5.8 million less — than what the board expected when it developed the current budget. The 1.2 percent tuition and fee increase will cover $2.9 million of that difference. The remaining $2.9 million will be funded from the 2007-2008 general fund balance.

However, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said that in an effort to give students time to plan for this increase, MSU will provide a 1.2 percent tuition offset for spring tuition and fee bills, resulting in no additional costs for students in the spring. The 1.2 percent increase will be reflected on the summer bill.

Because enrollments were higher than expected this year, the projected 2008-2009 tuition revenue is expected to make up the $2.9 million that would have been collected in the spring semester through increased tuition.
