Women's soccer knocks off Eastern Michigan, 3-0

Heyboer scores twice in win

September 5, 2008

Each of the MSU women’s soccer team’s games have been a mirror of the previous one — score early, add insurance goals and don’t allow the opponent a chance to get back in the game.

Friday afternoon was no exception to that trend.

The Spartans got on the board quickly and never backed down, defeating Eastern Michigan 3-0 in the team’s first home game at DeMartin Soccer Stadium at Old College Field.

“I was as nervous today as I’ve been in years — I was just so excited, this is a huge transition for us (but) it’s a great venue,” MSU women’s soccer head coach Tom Saxton said. “I don’t think we were at our best today by any means but we found a way to win, so that’s a good sign for us.”

The shutout is the team’s third 3-0 victory in a row, as senior goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege has allowed just one goal in the Spartans’ four games this season.

“We’ve had really good defending and to be honest, I haven’t had to do a whole lot,” Wrege said. “We had a couple breakdowns but they didn’t result in goals.”

Just 8:55 into the game, junior midfielder Lauren Sinacola arched a crisp cross-field shot at the net that whizzed in between a leaping junior forward Lauren Hill and Eastern Michigan goaltender Maggie Manville. Hill managed to slip her head in the ball’s path as it grazed off her and redirected into the net.

Freshman forward Laura Heyboer and Hill once again showed how dangerous of a duo they are when Hill received a pass from Sinacola, tiptoed her way into the goalie box and dropped the ball off to Heyboer just before Manville took the ball from her.

Heyboer cocked her right leg back and slammed the ball into the top right corner of the goal — giving Sinacola her sixth assist and Hill her first on the year.

“At practice we always talk about communication, always to improve every game, every time we’re out there,” Hill said. “I think communication all around the field has been better.”

Two of the Spartans four first-half shots went for goals before ending with 10 on the day, giving them 14 goals on 44 shots this season.

With 24:30 to play in the game, Wrege dove and put her body parallel to the ground, stopping Deana Kinter’s breakaway shot attempt — the Eagles best opportunity of the afternoon.

Heyboer added another goal to extend the lead to three when she sprinted for a loose ball inbetween her and Manville. The freshman beat the goaltender to the ball, brought it closer to the net and calmy tapped it into the net — giving her five goals and 13 points this season.

But she admitted today’s game was bigger than normal — DeMartin Soccer Stadium took over her mindset.

“I did have butterflies — we’ve been practicing here for three weeks and we’d watch and look at the field before practice and talk about how we couldn’t wait to get out there,” Heyboer said. “So today knowing that we made history for MSU and for many teams to play here in the future, it’s just great to play on it for the first time.”

MSU hosts Loyola at noon Sunday.
