Heyboer scores twice in MSU win

September 12, 2008

It was the Laura Heyboer Show all afternoon.

But apparently Western Michigan’s ticket was for a different event, because nobody could find her.

The freshman forward tallied two goals and one assist in a 3-1 victory for the MSU women’s soccer team over Western Michigan on Friday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.

“I thought we did a really job getting the ball wide which was one of their weaknesses today,” Heyboer said. “We got it as wide as we could and then we’d switch is when we could. I think that’s how we combined a lot to get our chances up top.”

The Spartans are now 6-0, which ties the record for the best start in school history, matching the 2004 team’s efforts before it fell in their seventh game at Rutgers.

MSU has posted 19 goals in its six games this season — the most goals in the first six games since 1994.

But they aren’t ready to pat each other on the back just yet.

“We need to continue to establish ourselves at home and take out of these games what we can, we have to understand the challenge will continue to build as the season goes on,” MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.

With 28:40 to play in the first half, Heyboer showed how lethal she is near the goal after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Kelsey Tait and faking out Western Michigan goalkeeper Julia Francy in the box before sliding the ball into the back corner of the net.

But when she isn’t scoring, she’s busy creating the opportunity for someone else to get on the board.

And in the 41st minute, it was a freshman-to-freshman connection.

Freshman midfielder Hannah Peterson received a lead pass from Heyboer before she booted in a goal from a tough angle on the right side of the field — her first collegiate goal and the team’s 18th of the season, which was the total from all of last year’s 19 games.

“I’m very happy right now and we were very excited afterwards,” Peterson said with a bright smile across her face. “We had a good celebration out there.”

And Saxton said Peterson has truly earned her playing time — training hard over the past few weeks.

“She’s so composed and she handled it very well today,” he said.

Then in the second half, Heyboer beat the goalie with a few juke moves, stepped around one last defender and gracefully put it in — giving her eight goals on the year.

After an array of corner kick efforts, Western Michigan finally scored when Kelsey Carmichael whizzed the ball by every Spartans player huddled by the net attempting to block it — snapping senior goalkeeper Lindsey Wrege’s four-game shutout streak.

But it wasn’t enough, as MSU held on strongly the remaining 3:29.

“We knew Western, just like all the other in-state schools, was going to give us a heck of a fight,” Saxton said. “They are a very physical team. They pushed us around a little bit more than I would have liked to see in the first half, especially in the midfield. It was nice to have those dangerous weapons and have the two youngsters get us up 2-0.”

The Spartans host Kent State at noon on Sunday at DeMartin as the Green and White look to break the MSU women’s soccer record for best start in school history.
