Take a peek behind the curtain and test drive the NEW StateNews.com today!

Hello, my name is Wailau Ryder

Criminal justice freshman Wailau Ryder does not want to follow the footsteps of MSU alumnus and Ultimate Fighting Championship contender Rashad Evans.

However, Ryder does enjoy the sport of mixed martial arts, or MMA.

“I grew up watching a lot of martial arts films,” Ryder said. “And in Hawaii, there’s actually a lot of fights, so I grew up around the environment and it became kind of a hobby.”

Ryder, who has been training as an MMA fighter for four years, knew he wanted to continue fighting when he came to MSU. He found the MSU Mixed Martial Arts Club and has really liked the “laid-back feeling” he has found there.

But the sport is not for everyone, Ryder said.

Ryder recommends if it does feel like one might enjoy fighting, to make sure to do it in a safe, clean and controlled environment, such as a club.
