Special draft held for Green-White intrasquad matchup

April 14, 2008

It’s not the NFL, but that didn’t stop MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio from conducting a little draft of his own.

Dantonio acted as commissioner Monday afternoon as the team’s seniors split up and drafted the rest of the Spartans’ roster to either the Green or White team in preparation for Saturday’s spring game at 1:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

And pride won’t be the only prize up for grabs — a steak dinner will be awarded to the victorious squad, with the loser having to stomach the highly despised meal of hot dogs and beans.

“The deal’s been made and I’m banking on steak this year,” senior defensive end Brandon Long said with a grin. “The (beans last year) didn’t look good. That’s enough motivation for me. I’m a poor college student — I’ll take a steak whenever I can get it.”

Offensive line coach Dan Roushar will lead the Green team, and special teams and linebackers coach Mike Tressel will head the Spartans in white.

For the first overall pick in the draft, the Green team selected sophomore linebacker Greg Jones with little hesitation, then the White team obtained junior linebacker Adam Decker and junior defensive end Trevor Anderson as the next couple of picks.

Senior quarterback Brian Hoyer said it’s pretty much a no-brainer who will come out on top — his White team, who has a powerhouse defensive line packed with potential starters.

“We had a strategy going into the draft, and the Green team didn’t have a strategy,” Hoyer said. “We knew what we were doing.”

In the spring game, quarterbacks will not be live, but as active as possible without full-on contact. The special teams (field goal and extra point) will be live with all others having specific rules tacked on, Dantonio said.
