Americans love jumping on bandwagons. Whether it is the temperance movement or the latest diet craze, we simply love throwing ourselves into a cause — at least for a while.
The most recent cause we have undertaken: Saving the environment from the specter of global warming. Something so scary — the earth eventually getting so warm that life will cease to exist — must be true, especially with trusted scientists and spokespeople such as Al Gore promoting the cause to help save the world from utter destruction.
While the cause might be noble, this is another American, and international, bandwagon. We, as humans, like to think that we can solve any problem and I think we also like to believe that we have enough power to affect something as momentous as the climate.
It seems unlikely that, for those people that believe Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years, the last 200 or so years of industrialization has had a more significant impact on the environment than the 4.5 billion years or so of volcanic eruptions, which release carbon dioxide and other gases into the air.
In honor of the week devoted to increasing awareness about global warming, the Students for a Free Economy group is hosting a question-and-answer panel at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, in 105 S. Kedzie Hall. Check it out, whether you believe global warming is human-made or not.
Don’t just jump on a bandwagon like the rest of America; make an educated decision. A little bit of awareness goes a long way.
