Team needs to start earning its respect

Sean Ely

It got to the point where I was upset at myself for not bringing some gym shoes and shorts to change into.

Maybe head coach Tom Izzo would have sent me in there?

OK, in all seriousness though, that was one of the most ridiculous — if not the most ridiculous — men’s college basketball games I have ever attended in my life.

Saturday night in Iowa City, the Spartans and Hawkeyes combined to shoot 27-for-92 from the floor, turn the ball over 28 times and rack up 35 personal fouls.

There was no flow, no rhythm and no intensity. At one point, I even pinched my own arm to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. What the hell was going on in Iowa City?

And I’m sure some people will think I’m bashing MSU — and others will say, “If you’re so good, why don’t you play NCAA basketball?”

You’re right — I can’t compete with these guys on the hardwood. But I’m not knocking these guys whatsoever.

I’m simply raising this point because I know MSU, and even Iowa, are much better squads than they showed Saturday.

It wasn’t all about poor shooting; it was about execution — or the lack thereof. I felt like both teams played like they were scared and lifeless as if their offensive integrity was stolen during pregame warm-ups.

Honestly, I saw a completely different team than earlier in the season. Maybe Izzo’s right? Maybe my fellow media colleagues and I have been giving the Spartans too much credit early on — writing that they truly have what it takes this year.

Well, as a fan, I’m officially back to a neutral frame of mind with Drew Neitzel and Travis Walton’s team.

I’ll make them earn any positive comments that come out of my mouth.

MSU has the potential to be great — they just aren’t there yet.
