Star defender gets invited to combine

MSU men’s soccer senior defender Rauwshan McKenzie was selected as one of 54 NCAA Division I players to attend the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, the team announced Friday.

“Rauwshan is one of the finest student-athletes I have ever coached,” MSU head coach Joe Baum said. “He is a very gifted athlete and I think he will shine at the combine.

“After watching him play, hopefully the MLS coaches will realize you can’t teach his athleticism.”

McKenzie, a first team All-Big Ten selection, would be the third Spartan drafted to the MLS during the past three seasons.

In his four years as a starter, he notched 72 consecutive starts. The Hoffman Estates, Ill. native notched four goals and five assists in his career.

Success on the field started early for McKenzie, as he was named to the 2004-All Big Ten Freshman team.

Representatives from all the MLS teams will evaluate the players in the combine, which starts Friday and lasts through Jan. 15 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
