As a person who loves both sushi and well-written reviews of restaurants, I was immensely disappointed in the reviews of five sushi restaurants in Sushi showdown (SN 1/15). I understand the reviews were intended to be small in scale — the reviewers only had a California roll at each place.
However, these reviewers did not attempt to merely judge the quality of this single roll. They took their California roll and ran with it, giving the beloved restaurant SanSu Sushi and Cocktails a low rating and recommending that people not venture out of their way to eat there.
It is shocking that people would make such broad assumptions about these eateries from eating the simplest roll the featured restaurants have to offer. It would be like a professional food critic judging restaurants based on their bread basket.
If the reviewers didn’t enjoy that particular roll, that’s fine — but what of SanSu’s delicious cocktails, perfect salad dressing, top-notch service and all the complex, flavorful rolls that their sushi chefs create?
I have never met anyone who has been to SanSu and not loved whatever food they ordered. By judging SanSu on such shallow terms, the reviewers have no basis for suggesting that it is an inferior restaurant.
I would be concerned that this poorly reviewed article would hurt SanSu’s business, but I know that its countless loyal fans will still be lining up outside the door every night, continuing to prove that it is one of the best restaurants in the Lansing area.
