Around the Big Ten: Penn State hurt by loss of Claxton

January 24, 2008

Here is a quick look at the men’s basketball team’s next three opponents.

Michigan (5-14 overall, 1-6 Big Ten)

1 p.m. Sunday

Wolverines head coach John Beilein on his team’s defense, which has given up an average of almost 71 points per game:

“You’ll have defensive players, you’ll have offensive players, you’ll have people that do both. We are strong believers that guys that really feel the game offensively will feel the game defensively as well. We keep working through that to get people to get a better feel defensively — how the opponent is attacking and what his next move is. We’re not shooting the ball well, our turnovers are low, I don’t think we’re having great execution offensively, yet we’re averaging 61 points a game, which is not far from the norm from what Michigan has averaged over the last few years. Yet our defense is the one that is the problem in Big Ten play. We’re just giving up too many easy baskets.”

Illinois (9-11 overall, 1-6 Big Ten)

9 p.m. Wednesday

Fighting Illini head coach Bruce Weber on whether Illinois’ schedule, which has included road trips to Wisconsin, Indiana and Purdue, is a key to his team’s early season struggles:

“Well, yeah, there’s no doubt. If you complain about it then somebody will call you a whiner and all this stuff and you have to play everyone. But it’s the thing that, coaches if you coach, if you play, you understand how you need home games — you need little runs, you need to feel good about yourself. Our whole problem with the season was right after Christmas when we had the home games that we didn’t take advantage of and then it put us in a bind. We’ve played all the tough teams on the road and it’s a computer thing, but at the same time, it doesn’t make it easy for us.”

Penn State (10-8 overall, 2-3 Big Ten)

8 p.m. Feb. 2

Nittany Lions head coach Ed DeChellis on how his team is getting along without senior forward Geary Claxton, who tore his ACL against Wisconsin on Jan. 15.:

“We’re trying to find our way without Geary Claxton. We’re trying to change roles with some guys on our team, different guys are going to step up. We’re trying to find our rhythm without him because he did so much for our team.”
