ASMSU raises funding cap for student group

December 5, 2007

The International Student Association could see their spending capabilities triple thanks to a recently passed bill.

ASMSU’s Student Assembly unanimously passed a bill Nov. 15 that will increase the amount of money that the ISA is eligible to apply for throughout the year from $5,000 to $15,000.

“Without money, we can’t really put on a decent event,” said Mamud Dako, ISA vice president.

The International Student Association, or ISA, represents the international student body and hosts various cultural events that promote and encourage interaction among MSU’s international student organizations.

The programs are also meant to educate the general student body about the different cultures on campus.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

ISA has a very good reputation on campus,” said Osman Elfaki, vice chairperson for Student Programming, who introduced the bill. “Most recently, at one of their events, approximately 500 people showed up, and we want to help them grow.”

ISA, a member of the Council of Progressive Students, is one of about 13 organizations that sit on ASMSU’s Programming Board.

Through the Programming Board, which allocates about 20 percent of ASMSU’s budget, the 13 student organizations are able to apply for funding.

Groups are generally put on probation for the first one to two years, ASMSU’s Student Assembly Chairperson Michael Leahy said.

ASMSU allocates a specified amount of money that they are eligible to apply for to fund events during this time.

“(ISA) is a group that represents thousands of students, and they’ve done a great job this year for that group of students,” Leahy said.

“Basically, (increasing the ISA probationary cap) is saying you’ve done a good job, and we feel we can entrust you with more resources to put on larger events.”

Although ASMSU did not want to discourage the organization from continuing to host events because they do not have open access to funding opportunities, Elfaki said increasing the cap also will help strengthen the organization.

“Strengthening all the organizations that sit on the ASMSU’s Programming Board helps strengthen ASMSU as a whole,” Elfaki said.
