Accessories offered for MP3 players

December 3, 2007

As iPods and MP3 players become more of a necessity than a luxury, companies are banking on accessories to go along with them.

If a $200 music player isn’t in your price range, maybe the things that go along with it will be.

An MP3 case or protector

At www.caselogic.com, buyers can find leather, plastic and even sleeve cases for iPods.

The cases typically range in price from about $6-$15. As a bonus, some come with armbands or clips for people on the go, and the case selection can be searched by the type of iPod you want to complement.

Speakers

If you have a little bit more money to spend, check out www.bose.com. Speakers such as the SoundDock Portable digital music system typically cost a few hundred dollars. Instead of just regular speakers, try alarm clocks ($79.99 at www.theistore.com) or portable speakers — especially the water-resistant ones ($49.99). You can even get a little crazy and buy speakers that float in water ($119.99).

Colorful earphones

If you’re buying for someone who tends to lose things, stock them up with some fun new earphones, such as Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds Sound Isolating Earphones from www.theistore.com. The $29.99 candy-colored buds also come with a travel case.

Car charger

Nobody likes a dead MP3 player, especially during a long car ride. At www.supermediastore.com, chargers can be found for less than $20 and will allow users to enjoy a few tunes without worrying about draining a battery.

Car adapter

Before using the MP3 player in the car, an adapter is usually necessary. Some hook up to the radio and play on a specific channel, like an FM transmitter, while others can be plugged into the vehicle’s lighter jack or tape player.

FM transmitters can be found at www.apple.com for about $79.95, and cassette adapters run about $25. Take your pick.

A remote

For those lazy friends in your life, try an iPod remote. The next time they get sick of a song, they won’t even have to leave their seat to change it. The handy little fella can be purchased off the Apple Web site for $49.

For other gift ideas and prices, consult Web sites such as www.apple.com or www.theistore.com.
