Jefferson hurt, out for season

November 5, 2007

The MSU women’s basketball team has been stricken with yet another ACL tear.

After losing Lauren Aitch for all of last season and Mia Johnson for the beginning of this season with the injury, the Spartans lost junior forward Aisha Jefferson for the season Sunday after she tore the ACL in her right knee during the exhibition win over Lake Superior State.

“I think that she was in the best shape of her life,” MSU head coach Suzy Merchant said at her Monday press conference. “She told me that she was the healthiest she’s been in a long time.

“She’s down, but she is a vivacious person that will energize us in a different role this year.”

Jefferson looked to be on her way to a career year after posting 24 points in the exhibition opener and following that up with eight points and five rebounds in the 11 minutes before she got injured Sunday.

“(Aisha) does a lot for us, not only talent-wise, but emotion-wise, as well,” Merchant said. “She’s our leader, but I do think we have some kids that can step up and will step up.”
