I am writing in response to Steve Ross’ letter Rumors regarding student campaign group untrue (SN 11/26). After reading the letter, I couldn’t help but think that the degeneration of politics into what it has become today is going to continue well into the future. I thought to myself, “Wow, the petty bickering has not only infested just about every presidential primary campaign, it has now spread to the grassroots of those campaigns as well.”
And I thought that many people would feel the same way after reading this letter, but lo and behold, on The State News’ online forums provided for feedback regarding letters, the bickering continued. I couldn’t help but feel, well, hopeless. People who care enough about politics to actively take part are the leaders of tomorrow. They haven’t even been elected to office, they haven’t even run a campaign and they are already bickering- and yes, there is a difference between intelligent debate and inane bickering. If this is really the best we can do, we might as well just keep President Bush or write in Stephen Colbert for 2008.
