Badgers come back, tie icers 4-4

November 24, 2007

There’s an old hockey saying that a two-goal lead is the toughest to hold.

That was true for the No. 5 MSU hockey team Saturday night as No. 12 Wisconsin scored twice in the final 10 minutes to forge a 4-4 tie Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.

“It’s disappointing, for sure,” MSU head coach Rick Comley said.

The two teams went into the third period deadlocked at two after Wisconsin (5-6-1 overall) scored with 5.6 seconds left in the period.

MSU (8-3-2) struck twice in 28 seconds early in the third period as both junior forward Matt Schepke and senior captain Bryan Lerg scored their second goals of the game, but the Badgers would score two of their own within 3:10 of each other later in the period to tie the game.

“We had some mistakes by defensemen that lead to two goals,” Comley said.

The Spartans got a power play with 1:18 left in overtime and had several chances to score the game winner but couldn’t capitalize. MSU went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

“This team has showed a propensity not to give up and that’s a positive thing,” Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves said.

Freshman Scott Gudmandson stopped 23 shots for Wisconsin while junior Jeff Lerg made 33 saves for the Spartans.

MSU heads back into CCHA play next weekend with a two-game set at Lake Superior.
