Police seek link in mask man crimes

October 23, 2007

Police are investigating whether an armed robbery of a local Jimmy John’s Tuesday morning by two suspects wearing masks from the movie “Scream” are related to a similar incident that occurred Monday.

Meridian Township police said a pair of suspects robbed Jimmy John’s, 4790 S. Hagadorn Road, at gun point and took an undisclosed amount of money at 3:50 a.m. on Tuesday. The suspects fled through a back door in an unknown direction.

Both suspects were described as about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, gloves and “Scream” masks.

The robbery comes one day after a 19-year-old female student was robbed at knife point early Monday morning by an unidentified man in a “Scream” mask while making a fast food delivery to Spartan Village.

She surrendered $24 and her cell phone, valued at $200, to the suspect after having her mouth covered and being told to keep quiet. The victim reported seeing a 2-1/2 to 3-inch silver blade in the man’s hand.

The victim in Monday’s robbery described the suspect as a male wearing dark clothing and black gloves but could not provide a description of his physique.

A second person dressed in dark clothing was seen fleeing with the suspect Monday.

Nobody was harmed in either incident.

Meridian Township police Sgt. Greg Frenger said his department and MSU police have already been in contact. The departments will work together while investigating the two cases.

“We have information and leads to follow up on both ends,” Frenger said. “Cases in East Lansing and MSU tend to have the same bad guys, so we’re going to work together on that one.”

Frenger would not comment as to the amount of money taken Tuesday.

A manager at the Jimmy John’s location declined to comment on the incident.

Anyone with information about the incidents is being asked to call MSU police at (517) 355-2222, Meridian Township police at (517) 853-4800 or Crime Stoppers at (517) 483-STOP.
