ASMSU bill proposes addition of event coordinator to staff

October 8, 2007

ASMSU officials said they realize many students have no idea what events they do and do not sponsor.

That is why Student Assembly is voting Thursday on whether or not to add an event coordinator position to their central staff.

Juan Carlos Elizalde, Student Assembly vice chairperson for internal affairs, said it is important for ASMSU to establish itself to the public by sponsoring more popular events.

“We have been criticized about how we don’t sponsor enough,” Elizalde said. “But people don’t realize what we do behind closed doors. If the bill passes, we will look to hire a student who will be active in setting up speakers and concerts, someone who focuses strictly on planning these events.”

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

Student Assembly Chairperson Michael Leahy said the position holder would be paid an estimated salary of $3,000 and would work until the end of the school year.

There is about $150,000 in rollover money from last school year’s budget. More than half of the money could be used directly for special projects, Elizalde said.

Leahy said he doesn’t know why there hasn’t been an events coordinator in the past, but the student tax increase two years ago may have had something to do with it. The $1.3 million dollar budget allows ASMSU to look at bigger projects, he said.

ASMSU has been talking about sponsoring a large concert with more than 10,000 people, held outdoors at Munn field or in Breslin Center.

“I think it would be an awesome thing for MSU to have,” communication sciences and disorders sophomore Lauren Patrick said. “It would be great to be able to say our school had a big name come to it.”

Polling students is something Leahy said the communication department at ASMSU would be in charge of.

“We would have representatives go around and ask students, ‘If you could bring any band to MSU, who would it be?’ After a couple thousand responses, we would be able to make a better decision on who would appeal to the most students possible,” Leahy said.

Leahy said anyone interested in planning events, with some experience, can apply if the bill passes.

“The job would be great for the hired student at the same time because it gives him or her the chance to work with some money and plan things that appeal to a large population,” Leahy said.
