One arraigned, more arrested in connection with vending vandalisms on campus

September 11, 2007

MSU police believe they have made progress in tracking down those responsible for the recent vandalizations of campus vending machines.

A Lansing resident was arraigned Monday and police arrested an undisclosed number of additional suspects at Bessey Hall Sunday.

Lamar Pierson Jr. was charged with two counts of breaking and entering into a coin-operated device Monday. Each felony charge is punishable by up to three years in prison and/or a $1,000 fine.

Pierson is scheduled for a pretrial hearing at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the 54-B District Court in East Lansing. He was released after 10 percent of his $1,000 bond was posted.

Other suspects were arrested in connection with the vandalizations, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said, but their names and the number arrested were not available Tuesday. “I wouldn’t say that one person is responsible for all of them,” McGlothian-Taylor said.

McGlothian-Taylor said that it is too early to link those arrested Sunday with other vandalizations of vending machines in the past two months.

Since late July, Pepsi-owned vending machines and Canteen Service Co. snack machines have been the target of at least nine vandalizations, resulting in more than an estimated $13,500 in damage.

Norm Harris, district manager for Canteen Service Co. in Lansing, said the rash of battered vending machines has garnered the attention of the company.

Harris said that even though vending machine vandalizations are rare, the recent incidents affect the company’s standing with the university.

“No, this is not common,” he said. “We had an incident years back and they found the individual and prosecuted that person, and the problem went away.”
