Community Relations Coalition aims to strengthen student, permanent resident relationships

September 3, 2007

Ann Nichols has found that the best way to ensure a good relationship with her neighbors is to introduce herself right off the bat.

She does that with baked goods.

“I had a lot of trouble with students until last year,” Nichols said. “Last year, I made friends with people.”

Nichols, a permanent resident of East Lansing on the Core Group of the Community Relations Coalition, or CRC, met many of her student neighbors last fall at the CRC’s first Ice Cream Block Party.

“My favorite part (of the block party) was I met students who are our friends all year round,” Nichols said.

The ice cream socials -the first of which was last week – are one of the events Rachelle Woodbury, community liaison of the CRC, has planned to help bring students and residents together.

Woodbury said she is constantly thinking of ways to strengthen the rapport between students and permanent residents.

“The point of these ice cream socials is just for people to meet their neighbors,” Woodbury said.
