ASMSU offers new tailgate, minus booze

September 5, 2007

Hours before MSU’s home football games, some students will be getting on their face paint and their tailgate.

For several months, ASMSU worked to re-establish the tailgating craze since campus police has buckled down on alcohol consumption and drinking games.

The undergraduate student government is revamping it without promoting guzzling down booze.

Five hours before every home game, a free student tailgate will take place at the tennis courts across from East Wilson Hall. Alcohol is allowed in the vicinity, but ASMSU stresses the idea that students don’t need to drink to tailgate.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

“Tailgating is a big part of MSU’s culture,” said Nigel Scarlett, Student Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, whose summer project was to organize the tailgate events.

“It promotes camaraderie. I know a lot of people want to tailgate by drinking but with games it gives them alternatives,” Scarlett said. “You don’t necessarily have to drink to participate and have a good time.”

Some of the games students could see at a Saturday event include a large inflatable Twister board, a Velcro wall, a gladiator joust, bouncy boxing and a couple different quarterback challenges. There will be a DJ and discounted concession prices as well.

ASMSU sells $15 parking passes for each game, based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“It is definitely not like it used to be at the tennis courts during my freshman year,” said Molly Megargle, a communications senior who stopped by the event before Saturday’s game against University of Alabama-Birmingham. “It’s not as intense without drinking games, but it is still a good time.”

“The people that are going to drink are still going to drink. This won’t do a whole lot for them, but it’s worth a try – it’s a good effort. Time will tell,” Megargle said.

Michael Leahy, Student Assembly chairperson, said he is confident this alternative to binge drinking can be effective.

“Once people see the activities, the event will be popular,” he said. “But they actually have to come out and see it. With a lot of people there, it is going to be fun.”
