MSU professor dies on study abroad

Sweeney spends last days in London teaching students

August 30, 2007

J. Morgan Sweeney began his career at MSU in 1976 and instantly was drawn to the study abroad program. He took students on trips to Ireland, England and Scotland, and was known for his “dry Irish wit” and charm.

Sweeney, 62, died of natural causes in London on Aug. 8. He was there with a group of MSU students for a history, arts and humanities program.

“He was the most charming man I think I ever met,” said Christine Daniels, a history professor and colleague of 15 years.

“He was also incredibly witty – just hilarious. I used to always threaten to marry him.”

Accounting senior Carolyn Obrecht took Sweeney’s Europe in the Age of Revolution class two years ago and said she expected it to be boring.

“He really had a great teaching style,” Obrecht said. “He just kind of sat there and lectured. He didn’t need to captivate your attention with presentations or anything
