Trial continues with 2nd suspect

April 25, 2007

Lansing — Jurors were selected Tuesday for the start of the murder trial of Kumbi Salim, also known as Stanley A. Price.

Salim, 55, is charged with the murder of 20-year-old MSU student Martin V. Brown near Jenison Field House at about 1:30 a.m. on March 11, 1973.

Fourteen jurors were chosen in Judge James Giddings 30th Judicial Circuit Court to decide Salim's fate.

A second suspect, Gary Mason, 52, was found guilty of Brown's murder last month after a five-week court battle and is awaiting sentencing.

Brown was stabbed 10 times while walking home to his Armstrong Hall dorm room after leaving a party in Campbell Hall.

Brown informed police then he was attacked by two men wearing army fatigues while being transported to Lansing's Sparrow Hospital. He died shortly thereafter.

Salim was initially charged with Brown's murder in May 1973.

However the case was thrown out because his Miranda rights were violated. He was interviewed by police without his lawyer present.

During Mason's trial, the two were identified as a part of the Topographical Research Center in Detroit, a social group advocating for civil and social rights.

Salim and Mason gave a presentation for the group on campus the night of Brown's murder. Members of the group were known to wear military fatigues.

The Topographical Research Center was described as a hate group during Mason's trial. Erik Matwiejczyk, an assistant Ingham County prosecutor, referred to the group this way several times during the trial.

During his March 2 closing arguments, he reiterated the murder was racially motivated.

Salim's trial will continue at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Lansing.

Opening remarks will be made by Matwiejczyk and defense attorney Mitchell H. Nelson.
