Cincinnati hires CMU's Kelly, opening door for Narduzzi at MSU

December 5, 2006

New football coach Mark Dantonio has already brought seven of his Cincinnati coaches with him to MSU. It soon could become eight.

Pat Narduzzi, who was named interim head coach at Cincinnati when Dantonio left, could be named MSU's new defensive coordinator in the upcoming days.

On Monday, Cincinnati introduced former Central Michigan coach Brian Kelly as its new head coach. Dantonio indicated Friday that Narduzzi would join MSU's staff if he wasn't hired as Cincinnati's head coach, and Narduzzi made similar statements last week.

Narduzzi, a 40-year-old Youngstown, Ohio, native, was the Bearcats' defensive coordinator from 2004-06. He held the same position at Miami (Ohio) in 2003 and was linebackers coach at Northern Illinois from 2000-02.

Cincinnati ranks 34th of 119 Division I teams in scoring defense this season.

Central Michigan announced offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn as interim head coach Monday.
