Once upon a time, The Green Door Blues Bar & Grill, 2005 E. Grand River Ave. in Lansing, was a watering hole without a signature shot. That is, until manager Jenny Costigan got a call from The State News. She said there really wasn't a drink they were known for, but she'd consult with her bartenders and see what they could think up.

Fast-forward to Wednesday night, when Costigan and four other Green Door bartenders — Jesica Starr, Tricia Blakely, Rachel Loncharch and Emily Batty — put their personal creations to the test in front of a panel of their fellow employees and some of the bar's regular customers.

Most of the shots followed a theme set by the bar's titular color scheme. Starr's Green Starr, Batty's Green Belzabob, Loncharch's Gremlin and Blakely's Behind The Green Door — after the classic skin flick of the same name — had the hues to match their names.

The only deviation was Costigan's Wicked Jenny, which was given a pinker shade by its combination of vodka, amaretto, peach schnapps and cranberry juice. Is the name of the shot used in reference to Costigan?

"Oh, once in a while," she said.

Once the shots were taken, it was decision time. Casting their votes on Post-it Note-sized ballots, the panel and the bartenders chose their favorite, but not without trepidation.

"It's like trying to pick somebody from the Miss America pageant," said doorman Cullen Gnass.

Voting ended in a tie, with 4 votes for both for Green Belzabob and Wicked Jenny, and 2 votes each for Behind The Green Door and Green Starr. Costigan said it was now up to the bar's owners to decide what will become The Green Door's signature shot.

However, as she was mixing, she expressed her confidence in Wicked Jenny.

"That's the owner's vote — let's put it that way," she said.
