Olin Health Center offers medical relief on campus

June 12, 2006

There's help right here on campus, when you need it.

Olin Health Center, MSU's on-campus health facility, provides students with general and urgent medical care six days per week. It also offers gynecology, lab testing, dental care, physical therapy, radiology and houses an allergy and immunizations clinic.

"We want to help, we want to be here for (students) to make sure they stay healthy and stay in classes," Olin Health Center spokesperson Kathi Braunlich said.

Olin is located on MSU's campus next to Berkey Hall and directly across from the Student Book Store on Grand River Avenue.

Students receive three free medical visits per academic school year in the urgent care, gynecology and primary care offices, Braunlich said. After the third visit, students have to pay for their office visit.

The psychiatry department allows students three free lifetime visits during their entire academic career at MSU, Braunlich said. The free visits begin Aug. 15 of every school year.

Students or a student's insurance company pay for lab tests, X-rays, and prescription medicines, Braunlich said.

Almost all insurance companies are accepted at Olin, Braunlich said, adding the insurance companies will decide what is covered or isn't.

"Be very familiar with your insurance plan before coming up to school to see what will and won't be covered," Braunlich said.

The most common risk for incoming students is the common cold and flu.

Having a basic first-aid kit around the dorm room will be helpful, Braunlich said.
