An Eaton County Sheriff's Department sergeant was charged Monday with filing a false report that he was shot March 20, area news organizations reported.

Sgt. Jeff Lutz is being charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors. He originally said he was patrolling near Waverly Road and Saginaw Highway when he approached a suspicious person, who then shot him. The original report sparked a manhunt in Delta Township for a black male suspect.

Monday's news prompted area residents to speak out against the falsified description, saying it furthered racial stereotypes.
