ONLINE UPDATE: Rally, counter-events at Capitol set to begin

April 22, 2006

Lansing — Plans are in motion for today's National Socialist Movement rally at the Capitol Building, as well as many other counter-protests, to go as scheduled.

Several hundred police officers are in place throughout downtown Lansing, including those from the Michigan State Police and the Lansing police.

The National Socialist Movement, or NSM, rally is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Capitol Building.

Lansing police spokesman Lt. Bruce Ferguson said that police see a "really successful day," which he described as people voicing their views as they need to, but without causing injuries or arrest.

"We paid attention to what (the NSM) brought to other locations," Ferguson said of police preparation. "That's the best intelligence you can have."

A diversity celebration organized by the City of Lansing will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. at Eastern High School, 220 N. Pennsylvania Ave., in Lansing.

Several counter-protests were set to begin at 12:30 p.m. at Riverview Park at the corner of Michigan and Grand avenues, in Lansing, including ones advertised by the Lansing Coalition Against Nazis, MSU's Black Student Alliance and the National Women's Rights Organizing Coalition.
