Polar plunge

MSU students dive into wintry waters for charity

Lansing — Even though the temperature hovered around a frigid 25 degrees, that didn't stop about 80 people from plunging into an icy pond at Hawk Island County Park on Sunday.

They weren't entirely crazy, though. They were participating in the second annual Lansing Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Michigan.

Most everyone got into the spirit by wearing elaborate costumes — from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to cheerleaders and ballerinas.

Members of Residents Halls Association, or RHA, jumped along with residents from McDonel and Bryan halls.

"It's cold," said Kevin Newman, president of RHA. "But it was tolerable, and it's for a good cause."

Newman said he wouldn't be hopping into freezing water again any time soon.

There were several awards given out, including best jump and best costume.

The event raised more than $22,000 in donations.
