WEB ONLY: Spartans sweep conference foe at home

November 14, 2005

The MSU women's volleyball team (12-14 overall, 5-11 Big Ten) easily defeated Indiana (9-19, 2-14 Big Ten) for the second time this season, sweeping them 3-0 at Jension Field House on Saturday.

It was the Spartans' first Big Ten sweep at home this season.

After jumping out to an early 11-9 lead in the first set, the Spartans' offense caught fire, hitting at a .286 clip to give them the 1-0 advantage.

It didn't take long for the Spartans' defensive end to pick up. In the second set, senior middle blocker Brooke Langston had one block solo while senior defensive specialist Marley Bellwood added a floor-best four digs.

The Spartans ended the second set with an impressive .424 hitting percentage.

Meanwhile, the Hoosiers couldn't find an answer for the Spartans' suffocating style of play, hitting well under .200 for the match.

The Spartans' strong defensive presence at the net allowed them to wrap up the sweep in the third set.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Schatzle tallied 17 kills in the match.

MSU will try to snap its five-game Big Ten road losing streak this weekend when it travels to Northwestern and Wisconsin.
