Spartans get swept for the 2nd consecutive conference weekend

October 17, 2005

The MSU women's volleyball team fell to No. 19 Ohio State on Friday and was then swept by No. 4 Penn State on Saturday.

The losses drop MSU to 9-9 overall, 2-6 in the Big Ten.

They were playing without sophomore outside hitter Katie Johnson who suffered a undisclosed left arm injury last week against Illinois.

The Spartans took the first game from Ohio State (12-5, 5-3) on Friday but lost the next three. MSU was led by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Schatzle, who posted 12 kills.

On Saturday, the Spartans never got going offensively. Penn State (17-2, 8-0) disrupted the Spartans game plan, outhitting them .380 to .047.

Senior middle blocker Megan Wallin tried to provide some spark for the Spartans with 11 kills, but Penn State's strong defensive presence at the net proved to be too much.

Senior setter Mickey Davis added 30 assists for the Spartans, while senior middle blocker Brooke Langston tallied 10 kills.

The Spartans are 2-3 on the road in the Big Ten.

MSU will try to end its four-game skid when it returns home on Friday to face Wisconsin.
