WEB ONLY: Spartans look to bounce back against Hoosiers

September 23, 2005

The MSU volleyball team (7-4 overall) will try to shake off a tough loss to Michigan when it travels to Bloomington to take on Indiana at 7 p.m. tonight.

MSU head coach Cathy George can't repeat it enough that the team's focus needs to be on its weakness - playing an all-around consistent game.

"We're going to work on hitting and attacking and making sure we have better control on our side," George said.

The Michigan game marked the third time this season the Spartans couldn't close out a five-game match, making the team 0-3 in five-game matches. Taking on Indiana (6-5) tonight, defensive specialist Miken Trodgon knows that her team can't afford to make crucial errors as the team gets deeper into the Big Ten season.

"We'll have to work on reducing errors and trying to put the clamps on people in crunch time situations," Trodgon said. "We need to learn to stop the other team from getting a run."

Indiana ranks seventh in the country in blocks per game with 3.48 and middle blocker Annie Moddrell is tied for seventh in the nation with 1.74 blocks per game. The Hoosiers are 3-2 at home averaging 83 service aces compared to their opponents' 50.

Last year against Indiana, senior middle blocker Brooke Langston had a career high of eight block assists as the Spartans defeated the Hoosiers in a sweep, 3-0. The Spartans went on to win both matches against Indiana and holds an all-time series lead, 33-24.

With the Hoosiers being a great defensive team, Langston knows that her team needs to be up for the challenge.

"Whatever they throw over, we have seen it before. We played thousands of balls just like it and it's a matter of what we do on our side of the court," Langston said.

The Spartans are currently 3-3 on the road.
