UAB event gives siblings, students time for bonding

September 26, 2005

Kristin Frey stood to the side, watching her younger sister display her moves in a big-screen version of the game Dance Dance Revolution.

Frey, a predental sophomore, said she doesn't think she could play the video game, but enjoyed watching her sister dance to the music.

"I have never tried it," she said. "I wouldn't know how to play, but I love watching it."

Frey invited her sister, Cindy, 11, to come to MSU for the day as part of the University Activities Board's first annual Lil' Sibs Saturday. The event was a way for MSU students to bring their young siblings to campus and participate in a number of activities.

"I don't really see her that much," Frey said. She said she heard about the event when eating lunch at the International Center last week. "It's cool for older siblings to hang out with their younger siblings."

Frey and Cindy were at the International Center on Saturday afternoon for the arts and crafts part of the day's programs. The rest of the planned activities included a concert by "Triple Frett," a group of 12-year-old boys from Kalamazoo, and a double feature movie later that night.

University Activities Board Spirit and Traditions Director Shannon Hoffman said she got the idea for the event last year when she applied for the director position with the University Activities Board.

"My friend goes to Central (Michigan University) and they have an amazing little sibs day," said Hoffman, a journalism sophomore. "It is a whole weekend, not even just a day. They have a carnival, they have a concert, they have shirts, they get to go to the gym for free, they get to do tons of stuff. I was like 'We're State, we can surely do something like that.'"

Hoffman said she was excited to plan the event and see it unfold. She said she has loved having her cousins visit her, and was excited to see all the siblings at the arts and crafts activity.

"It provides a way for people to bring their families together and do something with people in their families," she said.

Education junior Jessica Fiema brought her younger sister, Quin Girardin, to make a bejeweled Popsicle-stick picture frame at the International Center. With eight years between Fiema and Quin, 12, Fiema said she doesn't get much time to spend with Quin during the school year.

"I really like it a lot," Fiema said. "I was really excited to have her come here. She has never come to State to stay with me. It seemed like a good opportunity."

But marketing freshman Ryan Scaul said it gave him and his 9-year-old sister, Mackenzie, something to do on a weekend they were already planning to spend together.

Mackenzie said she was so excited to see her older brother that she started packing on Wednesday.

"This is her first time coming (to MSU), but she's welcome anytime," Scaul said. "You don't see your family the first month you are up here. This event gives you a chance to see them."
