MSU to host NCAA 2007 opening rounds

July 7, 2005

The NCAA Division 1 Women's Basketball Committee has selected MSU and the Breslin Center to host first- and second-round games for the 2007 NCAA Women's Basketball Championships.

"We're exited as a department to host the first and second rounds," MSU Director of Athletics Ron Mason said in a written statement. "It's great for our program and also really good for women's basketball in the state of Michigan. It's a tremendous reward for our program and really demonstrates that we have become a national program."

MSU is one of eight hosts, the others are Texas, Connecticut, Southern California, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, and Stanford. The sites for all those games will be played at the home arenas of each school. All of the sites and schools were approved by the NCAA Division 1 Championships/Competition Cabinet.

Last summer, MSU was in the running to host the first two rounds of the 2006 tournament but were turned down by the NCAA.

"We are so thrilled for Michigan State and the community which has shown great support program," MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie said in a written statement. "There's no doubt nationwide that folks are taking note of our attendance, the community support and excitement for women's basketball in Mid-Michigan and the success of our program."

The four regional hosts will be Dallas, Dayton, Ohio, Greensboro, N.C., and Fresno, Calif. The Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, will play host to the 2007 Women's Final Four on April 1 and 3.
